Projections of Hope - Honoring The Vision of Kate Johnson

A Benefit to Support Cancer Teamwork Response

Mike Garson, David Bowie's "Piano Man" will inspire us with a night of his music as this Event honors Kate Johnson.

Kate Johnson, an Emmy-winning producer, artist, and digital projections pioneer, left a memorable mark on the art world. She presented her work internationally, including at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Pompidou Museum, the Getty Center, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, on PBS and the History Channel. For 20 years she taught at Otis College of Arts & Design, inspiring several generations of now working artists. As President of EZTV (www.eztvmuseum.com), she helped save a valuable archive of seminal video and digital art, now part of the permanent collection of USC. She also collaborated with a number of recognized artists, including Performance Artist Barbara T. Smith, Donna Sternberg & Dancers, Lorretta Livingston and Dancers, and others. Her visionary approach to blending traditional and digital mediums continues to inspire. This event will showcase some of her short videos and iconic works through large-scale projections illuminating The Broad Stage. In addition to a night of music by Mike Garson and the showing of Kate's work, the evening will feature brief performances and talks by artists who collaborated with Kate. We are excited to announce a dance piece by Alina, among other special tributes. More details will come as we get closer to the event date.

The evening promises a celebration of creativity and collaboration, aligning with the festival's theme: "2024 is the year art and science collide!" All proceeds from the event will benefit the new youth services from Cancer Teamwork Response (CTR), an organization that Kate helped form. CTR is dedicated to providing free patient navigation services and continuing Kate's legacy of support and advocacy.

“There are life-changing moments, and meeting Kate was one for me. Without Kate's gifts of producing and writing, combined with her own painful cancer journey, Cancer Teamwork Response would not exist. She envisioned the voids in our healthcare system filled so that cancer wouldn't be so isolating and tedious to maneuver through. Her vision lives through CTR.” –Candy Hammeras, CTR Founder

Musician/composer Mike Garson (David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, St. Vincent, Duran Duran) will create and perform a new musical work accompanied by AI, dedicated to the memory of Johnson. Several of Johnson’s digital video works will be screened along with short presentation by collaborators, and experts. Dance Performances by Alina Kalinouskaya and Donna Sternberg & Dancers.

Hosted by Michael Masucci

Proceeds go to Cancer Teamwork Response.
